Nigeria Wins Her First Tokyo 2020 Olympic Medal

Nigeria secures its first medal of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after Ese Brume, in the early hours of Tuesday, claimed a bronze medal after finishing third in the women’s long jump event.

Brume achieved the feat with a 6.97m jump, two days after she qualified for the finals with a jump of 6.76m.

She leapt 6.97 metres with her very first jump to claim bronze behind Germany’s gold medallist Malaika Mihambo, with a jump of 7.00m and Brittney Reese, an American who claimed the silver medal with a jump of 6.97m.

The 25-year-old Nigerian had to settle for bronze because her second best effort of 6.67m was inferior to Reese’s 6.81m.

It is Nigeria’s first track and field medal at the Olympics since 2008 when Okagbare won a silver medal in Beijing.

It also makes the long jump the first individual event to give Nigeria three medals at the Olympics with Chioma Ajunwa’s gold at the Atlanta ‘96 Olympics topping Okagbare’s silver from 2008 and Brume’s bronze.

Brume’s win gives Nigerians reasons to cheer, after a run of negative news of defeats and the disqualification of some of the country’s athletes during the ongoing Olympics.
